A Look Ahead

Thankful for the successful spirit week last week.  Here's what I plan to teach this week:
Kindergarten Math- Numbers 6-10 (dot patterns, tally marks, etc), Counting to 100 by 1's
Kindergarten Phonics-  E and e, Names begin with a capital letter, Sentences need spaces
Kindergarten Science- Take care of your teeth, Take care of your body
Bible- Wordless book, Noah's Family obeyed, Call of Abram and Abram's Kindness to Lot
Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Psalm 37:27
First Grade Reading- Read four stories in Reader B, Have a Tea Party on Friday
First Grade Phonics- Suffixes, Syllable counting, Finish reviewing letters (x, y, z, q)
First Grade Math-  Counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's to 100, Math test on numbers to 100, Use Montessori materials to intro numbers in the 100's, subtraction

First Grade Writing: Pick a topic to write about.

Book Bags Week 3

Here are three of the self-designed books that I put in the kindergarten book bags this week.  I also included a place in the bags for the parents to leave comments.  Click on the pictures to download your own printable copy.

Dinosaur CVC Game

Here is a dinosaur CVC game that I made for my students.  All of my students have been really interested in dinosaurs lately, so I did some research and we have been studying dinosaurs all week. You can click on the picture to download the game.

Directions:
   1.  Turn over a card.  If you can read the word on the card, you can keep it.
   2.  If it is a "hatch another turn" card, you get to go again.
   3.  If it is a "bones" card, you get to take a card from your friend.
   4.  If it is a "game over" card, you count how many cards you have.  The winner is the person with the most points.

Apples!

Here's some of the apple work that we have been doing in kindergarten and first grade.  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

I have apples with the numbers 1-20 on a pocket chart.  I hide a worm behind three of the apples.  Every day we count to 20 using the apples and then I call on students to guess which number the worm is hiding behind.  It is really good for number recognition to 20.

Here is a great apple counting mat that I use with red and green pom-poms.  I can't remember where I downloaded the mats from, but you could probably make your own.  Let me know if you know where they came from and I will link to the proper website

The Horse in Harry's Room

I use the Bob Jones Press curriculum for all of my kindergarten and first grade classes.  The first grade reading curriculum is made up of five different readers with different stories in them.  The first reader was easy, so my students have already breezed through it in the first four weeks.  I am supplementing the curriculum with Syd Hoff and Peggy Parish books that I borrowed from the library and self-designed worksheet.  Here is the worksheet that my first graders will do on Monday for The Horse in Harry's Room by Syd Hoff.

Creation Snack

Welcome to my Blog!  Especially Pinterest Users!  Check out the labels on the right to find other great food and teaching ideas.  Please leave a comment at the bottom of this post and let me know how you plan to use this idea to teach about God's wonderful creation!

Every year after I teach the students about the days of creation, we eat a creation snack to review what God made on each day.  For Day 1, we eat chocolate and vanilla pudding for light/dark and day/night.  For Day 2, we eat blue jello and whipped cream for water and clouds.  For Day 3, we eat oreos for the dirt/ dry land.  For Day 4, we usually eat star sprinkles, but I couldn't find any, so we had yellow sprinkles for star dust.  For Day 5, we eat goldfish crackers.  And, for Day 6, we eat animal crackers.

The kids always enjoy this snack and it is an excellent way to review.

We Love Apples

I got the idea for this song from one of The Mailbox Magazine issues.
The song goes to the tune of "Clementine".
               We love apples, juicy apples.
               They are red and very sweet.
               Let's go pick them from the big trees.
               They are such a tasty treat!
I drew trees at the bottom, then I put a number on each tree and
had the kids come up and put the right number of apples on each
tree. 

Kindergarten Book Bags

I have decided to try something new this year- take home book bags for kindergarten.
I send the bags home for a week and they must be returned on the following Monday.
Each bag contains an inventory sheet, an eyeball stick (to point to the words), a weekly word list, a sheet of stickers (to place on words they read correctly from the word list), phonics flashcards, phonics books, a homemade book about the class, and a couple books (one or two they can read themselves, and one or two a parent can read to them).
I am excited to see how well they work!

A little about me..

This is my first attempt at a blog.  I have always really enjoyed reading other blogs about education and I have used several ideas from other blogs. But, I have noticed that I have not come across any blogs of Christian school teachers that use the Bob Jones Press Curriculum.   So, now it's my turn to put some of my ideas out there for other people to use and to see if there are any other small Christian school teachers that I can link up with. 

If this works well, I am also thinking about using this blog for the parents of my students to see some of the activities that we do in class.
