Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors

I also teach the Kindergarten and First Grade Sunday School class at my church.  We made this cute project to go along with learning about Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Before class, I cut a bunch of construction paper into one inch strips.  I also drew the outline of a coat on a strip of white bulletin board paper.

When the kids arrived at class, I showed them how they could take a few strips of paper and cut them into small pieces.

Then, I showed them how to glue the pieces onto the coat.

It was a great fine motor activity, as well as following directions.  One of my students was having a hard time understanding that he had to glue the paper inside the outline of the coat, not outside.

Creation Book

In addition to making the ever popular creation snack, we also made a creation book to go along with our learning of the days of creation.

Day 1:  Light and Dark/ Day and Night

Day 2:  Sky, Clouds and Water

Day 3:  Dry Land/ Trees/  Plants

Day 4: Sun, Moon and Stars

Day 5: Fish and Birds

Day 6: Animals and Man

Day 7:  God Rested

A Look at Last Week

We talked about dentists, doctors and keeping healthy last week in kindergarten.  I got this idea off of pinterest and modified it a little to talk to my students about eating healthy.  They really enjoyed the vegetables and cheese!

In kindergarten, we also did an experiment with milk, soda, and hard boiled eggs to see what kind of effect milk and soda have on our teeth.  We used hard boiled eggs to represent our teeth and put on in a cup of milk and another one in a cup of soda.  Then, we made predictions about what might happen to the egg.  Some of the predictions were, ahem, a little unrealistic.  After a couple of hours, we checked on the egg.  The egg in soda had turned brown and the egg in milk remained white.  After seeing the results, we had a discussion on the benefits of drinking milk and the dangers of eating alot of sugar and soda.

Some of the students in both classes were spreading a rumor about one of the first graders, so in our combined Bible class, we talked about being a good friend.  We listed characteristics of what kind of friend they would want, and then we talked about being that kind of friend to others.

In first grade phonics, we are learning about a penguin named Pip, so we made a penguin snack using oreos, Hershey kisses, and candy corn.

In first grade reading we were reading a story about a fox that wished she had a friend to share a snack with, so we had a tea party on Fun Friday and I shared a snack with them.  Also, a kindergarten parent came to pick up their child and dropped off donuts right before our party!

Creation Snack

Every year after I teach the students about the days of creation, we eat a creation snack to review what God made on each day.  For Day 1, we eat chocolate and vanilla pudding for light/dark and day/night.  For Day 2, we eat blue jello and whipped cream for water and clouds.  For Day 3, we eat oreos for the dirt/ dry land.  For Day 4, we usually eat star sprinkles, but I couldn't find any, so we had yellow sprinkles for star dust.  For Day 5, we eat goldfish crackers.  And, for Day 6, we eat animal crackers.

The kids always enjoy this snack and it is an excellent way to review.
